its kind in Israel. Additionally, a wine route was developed,

meandering through the wineries. The next required step

was to strive for official legal recognition of this outstanding

wine region, as is customary with quality wine regions

worldwide. Indeed, as part of the collaboration and in order

to further develop local tourism, a decision was reached to

promote the legal recognition of the Judean region, as the

first formal Israeli wine region.

During March 2017, members of the Judea Wineries Club

met and agreed on presenting a formal request to the

Ministry of Justice for recognition as a wine region. Initially,

the Regional Council approached various experts with the

aimof receivingprofessional reviews concerning the region,

emphasizinggrapecultivation, historyandgeography. Since

the name of the region was not yet formally defined by any

administrative framework, a decision was made to draw the

borders of the wine region as accurately and limitedly as

possible, and to divide the area into two subregions, aptly

expressing the internal diversity of the area, despite its

general homogenous elements.

At the beginning of 2018, based on expert opinions,

formal requests were filed with the Ministry of Justice, for

registration of an Appellation of Origin – for the region

of “Judea” and the subregions: “Judean Hills” (the high

mountain area non inclusive of the Judean Desert) and

“Judean Foothills” (the area west of the hills, starting at

elevations of 300-400 meters and downwards, bordering

with the central coastal plain), thus according to the

framework accepted in Europe, and additionally, a request

was filed for the registration of a Certification Trade Mark,

following the model known in the “NewWorld”, all in respect

to wines produced from locally grown grapes.

We are proud to announce that in April 2019, a primary

wine region representing a Certification Trade Mark was

registered in Israel, i.e. the JudeaWineriesClub logo, thereby

proclaiming the wineries as Israeli pioneers. The application

for the “Appellation of Origin” has also reached advanced

deliberation and approval stages. Soon, consumers shall

meet this unique identification sign on labels of wines

produced in the region, indicating and certifying that the

wines were produced from quality grapes, grown between

the limits of the excellent “Judea” wine region, or one of its

subregions, “Judean Hills” or “Judean Foothills”.
